On September 10th/11th, the project kick-off meeting of Climate-KIC Demonstrator-project “SAFERPLACES” (Improved assessment of pluvial, fluvial and coastal flood hazards and risks in European cities as a mean to build safer and resilient communities) under the lead of our partner GECOSISTEMA S.r.l. took place in Rimini, Italy.
Climate-KIC is currently the biggest pan-european public-private network for innovations in the fields of climate change, renewable energy and low emission industry. The focus-area “Climate Risk Information” deals, inter alia, with developing risk analytics tools which stakeholders (city planners, commodity traders, infrastructure investors and engineers, and businesses) can use to manage physical risk, reduce uncertainty and enable resilience-building decisions.
That´s exactly where “SAFERPLACES” comes into action, in which duration (2018-2021) und scope enhanced and highly-automated tools for calculating the pluviatile, fluviatile und maritime inundation risk are being developed, validated and calibrated in three European pilot studies, most probably bigger cities.
IB HUMER therefore will be active in the work packages of “Flood hazard characterisation and modelling” and “Resilient strategies and flood risk reduction” via the 2d-hydraulic calculation of heavy rain events (pluvial inundation) in consideration of the community infrastructure (storm water drainage) and taking care of the benchmarking of the automated tools.
